The history of the white Hart

A Potted Timeline

The Origin of The White Hart

The White Hart building dates back to 1672 but the earliest mention of it being a ‘beer house’ dates back to to around 1860.

Pre World War II

In the 1920’s, Mr Bert Lintott, son of the licensee, had carried out renovations. He recalls in 1920’s there were paraffin lamps in the bar and the pumps were in the kitchen. During the war, Canadians stationed in Wanborough would visit the White Hart. At that time there was no bar. The landlord, the Lintotts, served drinks from the kitchen. In 1950 they had electric lights and all conveniences. (Surrey Times 16th December 1950). Anita Ball remembers as a child (in the 1940s?) that there was only two small rooms and an off licence. All the area at the back was the publican’s cottage. The toilets were outside, and the restaurant was the barn which the cricket club used to keep their gear and change before the matches.

Modern Times

The White Hart re-opens on 10th September 2026! This iconic site which historically is known for its amazing food, drink, and atmosphere will once again be opening its doors. The White hart dates back to the 1800's and the character of the building is almost as colourful as the wonderful characters that have frequented this amazing landmark over the years. The brand new team headed by Jeremy Gordeno who has over 30 years experience in this industry. Jeremy has owned and operated 29 venues spanning from nightclubs (in his youth) through to pubs and restaurants in Surrey and Berkshire but also in Soho and Leicester square. The site will always be a traditional country village pub and the restaurant will serve all the pub classics.
